Originaltext der Erstbeschreibung
On Superior-Miami Highway, near boundary monument between Pinal and Gila Counties Arizona, at 4700 feet elevation, first seen in July 1922. Cespitose, few to many heads from one root, heads unequal in height; ribs deeply divided or tuberculate; areoles nearly circular or oblong, white, woolly, radials 10, unequal, white, centrals 1-4, stout, purlish, the upper one short, the lower one 25 mm long, slightly angular at base. This belongs to the triglochidiatus group, with crimson (not scarlet) flowers.

Morphologische Merkmale (eigene Untersuchungen)
Pflanzenkörper zylindrisch, gruppenbildend, Gruppen bis 1,5m Durchmesser, Triebhöhe bis 50 cm, Triebdurchmesser bis 14 cm. Epidermis grün. Rippenzahl 8-12. Wurzeln faserig verzweigt. Areolen oval. Randdornen 8 bis 12. Mitteldornen 1-4. Blüte kelchförmig, rot bis dunkelrot, bis 8 cm lang, bis 6 cm im Durchmesser. Frucht oval, grünbräunlich bis rotorange. Fruchtfleisch weiß, Samen schwarz.

USA, Arizona, Pinal / Gila County in 1300 bis 1400 m Höhe zwischen hellen Granitfelsen und Büschen. pH Wert: 4,0. Blütezeit am Standort: April, Blütezeit in Kultur: April.
